Veterans Build Program

At Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County, we are deeply committed to supporting the veterans who have served our country with valor. The Veterans Build initiative is our way of giving back, providing critical home repairs, and building new homes for veterans and their families.

Program Overview

One Mission: Empowering Veterans, Active Military Members, and their Families

Veterans Build is dedicated to empowering veterans, active military members, and their families. We strive to provide them with safe, decent, and affordable housing, while also offering opportunities for employment, volunteering, and personal growth within our community.

Five Pillars of Service

Our program is built on five key pillars:

Building

We construct and renovate homes to provide veterans with safe and affordable housing. Our projects include new home construction and critical repairs to help maintain and preserve existing homes.

Employment

We recognize the valuable skills that veterans bring from their military service. We actively recruit veterans to join Habitat for Humanity, whether as employees, board members, volunteers, or interns.

Volunteer Engagement

We offer fulfilling volunteer opportunities that not only help build homes but also bridge the gap between military and civilian life, fostering community integration.

Education

Our efforts extend to training our staff and volunteers to understand military culture better, ensuring effective communication and support for our veteran participants. We also provide financial education to aid successful homeownership.

Honor

We host special events throughout the year to honor veterans, including a Veterans Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11, which is a day of building and community service.

Community Support in Action: Renovating a Hero's Home

In Salisbury, Habitat for Humanity has made a significant impact on the life of Steven Phillips, a local Vietnam Veteran. Living on a fixed income, Phillips faced challenges with unexpected living expenses, particularly with home maintenance. Recognized for his service and the difficulties of managing living costs on a fixed income, Habitat for Humanity, with the support of partners like Owens Corning, stepped in to make crucial repairs to his home. This project included renovations to a thirty-one-year-old roof, an overflowing septic system, and outdated windows, marking the organization’s hundredth project in Wicomico County since 2013.

Veterans Services from Wor-Wic Community College

Owens Corning Program

The Roof Deployment Project was established in 2016 by Owens Corning Roofing and its Platinum Contractors to identify, honor and help protect veterans and their widows by installing new roofs.
