Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County Celebrates Make a Difference Day through $7500 grant from Lowe’s

October 13, 2022

Salisbury, October 13, 2022  Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County (HFHWC) has received a $7500 grant from Lowe’s to help complete seven Home Preservation Projects in Salisbury’s Church Street Neighborhood. The funding is part of Lowe’s partnership renewal with Habitat for Humanity that includes a donation of $2.5 million to support 100 local Habitat organizations undertaking home repair and rehab projects across the U.S.

On Make a Difference Day, Saturday, October 22, HFHWC will complete painting, landscaping, and minor exterior repairs of these seven homes. Created in 1992 as a way to encourage organizational volunteerism, Make a Difference Day has long been a staple in Wicomico Habitat’s service mission. In addition to completing the exterior home improvements, HFHWC will also be hosting a community outreach event from 12:00 pm. to 2:00 p.m. in the Grace Church/Salisbury Urban Ministries parking lot. Music will be provided by the WBOC radio family, and hot dogs and beverages provided by area Lions Clubs. Local service organizations will be on site, and kindness Rock painting and face painting activities will also be available.

Access to quality, affordable home repair and modification services continues to be out of reach for low to moderate income households across the nation. With the support of this funding, HFHWC will be able to further its efforts of helping families in Salisbury address critical health and safety issues in their homes.

“We are so grateful for Lowe’s investment in making homes safer for our neighbors in the Church Street neighborhood,” said Molly Hilligoss, Executive Director. “It is so impactful to be able to do these improvements on so many homes at once.”

Lowe’s and Habitat began their partnership in 2003. Since then, Lowe’s has supported many of the global housing nonprofit’s efforts, including the Women Build Program and Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization program. Lowe’s has also supported Habitat’s Cost of Home national advocacy campaign and sponsored local Habitat builds and employee volunteer days, in addition to providing affiliate grants and donated products. Lowe’s commitment through 2022 will bring the company’s total contributions to Habitat to more than $84 million.

About Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County

Habitat for Humanity works to make homeownership of decent, affordable homes a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County was founded in 1987; since then the affiliate has built and sold 72 homes locally. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent homes with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments come back to the affiliate to help build more homes for more families.
